what are implant-supported dentures?
Partial or complete removable dentures can require messy adhesives to stay put in your mouth, but implant-supported dentures are connected to metal posts in your jawbone in order to keep them stable and secure. This will ensure that the dentures won't move, even as you are speaking or eating. With more support and security, patients at Something To Smile About with implant-supported dentures can rest assured that their teeth will not shift. Implant-supported dentures look great and can be treated just like natural teeth. Our general and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kevin Boulard, makes custom implant-supported dentures that feel comfortable and look natural. "I was fortunate enough to have had Dr Boulard help me after an accident that knocked out my front teeth. Because of the extensive damage, I scheduled a consultation with Dr Boulard expecting reconstructive surgery, and it took no more than 2 hours for him to draw up a plan and I left the office that day relieved of pain (still no teeth). After many months of work, Dr Boulard proved his skills and expertise repairing my teeth making them look better than they did before and function as well. As someone who hates going to the dentist, he made sure I was comfortable throughout each procedure. Dr Boulard has an amazing team at his side. He details as a perfectionist would, but also makes the comfort of his patients his number one priority. He was extremely accommodative with scheduling and working with my insurance."- N.A. / Google / Oct 20, 2022

"As someone that loathes going to the dentist and having major anxiety about it I got lucky to have found Dr. Boulard and his amazing staff. From the very onset they treat you with the utmost respect and class. By the time you leave your first appointment you realize you made the right choice as they treat you like family. After the first conversation with Liz making the appointment I knew this was possibly the right place. And it was cemented the second you walk through the door and you're greeted by Liz her radiant smile and the feeling that you belong there. Easiest five star rating I've given. If there was an option for ten or fifteen stars they'd earn them all!! If you're on the fence hop over and give something to smile about a call."- B. / Google / Jan 19, 2022
"After delaying dental care for over a year, I found Dr. Boulard and have had two visits with his practice. I could not be more pleased! The staff is friendly and competent and showed deep concern for my needs and well being. After experiencing the intolerance and contempt the medical community at large has for those who cannot safely wear a face mask, I am overjoyed at the treatment and respect I received here. After my dental surgery, I got a follow-up call from Dr. Boulard himself, which I thought was so nice and caring. These folks stand head and shoulders above the rest and I am so grateful to have found them!"- L.P. / Office Visit / Jun 10, 2021

I love the fact that they have high tech scanners so I never gag, no more gunky impressions. and they have up to date technology, with the option of also getting Invisalign. The rest of the staff is lovely and the office manager, Olga, is amazing! They are so efficient and well mannered. I highly recommend!"- D.S. / Google / May 24, 2021

Who is a candidate for implant supported-dentures?
You may be interested in implant-supported dentures if you're currently wearing removable dentures or if you need dentures to replace your teeth. Unlike removable dentures, implant-supported dentures do not require soaking and adhesives to be maintained. Implant-supported dentures have fewer restrictions than removable dentures and can be cleaned like natural teeth. The dental implant simulates the natural roots of your teeth, so your gums and jawbone are less likely to atrophy. During your appointment, Dr. Boulard will examine the current condition of your mouth to decide if your gums and jaw are strong enough to bond with the implanted posts. If needed, bone and/or gum grafts may be performed to fortify specific areas before the implants are placed.
Dr. Boulard's implant-supported dentures techniques
Prior to any treatment, Dr. Boulard will complete a thorough exam, including digital x-rays to better understand the strength of your gums and jawbone. If the gums or jawbone are not strong enough to accept the dental implants, gum and/or bone grafts may be done. As soon as the grafted area has healed and is sufficiently dense, the implants can be placed.
Local anesthesia will be administered to numb your mouth before the surgery. Other sedation options may be discussed if it helps you feel more comfortable. Dr. Boulard will make incisions in your gums and place posts in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, at least four implants are needed per arch. The incisions in the gums will be stitched with part of the implanted post visible above the gums. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as your mouth heals over 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jawbone. As soon as Dr. Boulard decides that the posts are secure, your custom dentures can be connected to the implanted posts and fitted.
Taking care of your implant-supported dentures
Implant-supported dentures should be cleaned like natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. You will need to attend yearly cleanings and exams at Something To Smile About to have the fit and wear of your dentures assessed. When properly cared for, implant-supported dentures can last several years. Dr. Boulard can help you decide if your dentures should be replaced or repaired.
Implant-Supported Dentures FAQs
Do implant-supported dentures hurt?
No, implant-supported dentures do not hurt. In fact, they can provide a more comfortable and secure fit than traditional dentures. Many people who have these devices say they feel like they have their natural teeth back. There may be some discomfort or soreness after surgery to insert the implants, but this should go away within a short period.
Do I need to avoid certain foods with implant-supported dentures?
You do not need to avoid any foods with implant-supported dentures. Even hard or sticky foods can be eaten without worry. However, you should take care when chewing to ensure that you do not put too much pressure on the implants. Do not use your teeth to open packages or non-food items, as this can damage the implants.
How long do implant-supported dentures last?
Implant-supported dentures can last for many years with proper care. The implants themselves are typically made of strong and durable materials. Dr. Boulard can provide an estimate of how long your dentures are expected to last based on your individual situation.
