what are implant-supported dentures?
Partial or complete removable dentures can require messy adhesives to stay put in your mouth, but implant-supported dentures are connected to metal posts in your jawbone in order to keep them stable and secure. This will ensure that the dentures won't move, even as you are speaking or eating. With more support and security, patients at Something To Smile About with implant-supported dentures can rest assured that their teeth will not shift. Implant-supported dentures look great and can be treated just like natural teeth. Our general and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kevin Boulard, makes custom implant-supported dentures that feel comfortable and look natural. Who is a candidate for implant supported-dentures?
You may be interested in implant-supported dentures if you're currently wearing removable dentures or if you need dentures to replace your teeth. Unlike removable dentures, implant-supported dentures do not require soaking and adhesives to be maintained. Implant-supported dentures have fewer restrictions than removable dentures and can be cleaned like natural teeth. The dental implant simulates the natural roots of your teeth, so your gums and jawbone are less likely to atrophy. During your appointment, Dr. Boulard will examine the current condition of your mouth to decide if your gums and jaw are strong enough to bond with the implanted posts. If needed, bone and/or gum grafts may be performed to fortify specific areas before the implants are placed.
Dr. Boulard's implant-supported dentures techniques
Prior to any treatment, Dr. Boulard will complete a thorough exam, including digital x-rays to better understand the strength of your gums and jawbone. If the gums or jawbone are not strong enough to accept the dental implants, gum and/or bone grafts may be done. As soon as the grafted area has healed and is sufficiently dense, the implants can be placed.
Local anesthesia will be administered to numb your mouth before the surgery. Other sedation options may be discussed if it helps you feel more comfortable. Dr. Boulard will make incisions in your gums and place posts in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, at least four implants are needed per arch. The incisions in the gums will be stitched with part of the implanted post visible above the gums. The posts will be covered with a temporary denture as your mouth heals over 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jawbone. As soon as Dr. Boulard decides that the posts are secure, your custom dentures can be connected to the implanted posts and fitted.
Taking care of your implant-supported dentures
Implant-supported dentures should be cleaned like natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. You will need to attend yearly cleanings and exams at Something To Smile About to have the fit and wear of your dentures assessed. When properly cared for, implant-supported dentures can last several years. Dr. Boulard can help you decide if your dentures should be replaced or repaired.
